This sounds quite like her husband, Iago, who deems all women to be the same, as well. “‘Tis not a year or two shows us a man:/They are all but stomachs, and we all but food:/They eat us hungerly, and when they are full/They belch us.” (3.4.109-112).Įmilia nonchalantly categorized all men to be as heartless as she described in the above quote. Think about it! What does Emilia think of men? Once Desdemona loses it, Othello loses his love and trust in her, and there is nothing holding them together anymore. My interpretation of this art piece is that Othello and Desdemona are bound by this handkerchief, as the handkerchief is a symbol of their love. Here is a digital painting by Eldanis on DeviantArt. ![]() We want to shout through the pages and tell the characters what to do, but we can’t. Using dramatic irony is very effective in captivating the reader. Also, Bianca’s suspicions foreshadow that she may contribute to Othello’s belief in Desdemona’s infidelity, since Bianca’s suspicions would confirm Othello’s. This use of dramatic irony makes the reader uncomfortable (in a good, literary way) because they know that if Cassio would just show Othello that he is committed to Bianca, Othello may just stop suspecting Cassio. When Bianca suspects Cassio of cheating and agrees not to let Othello see Cassio with a woman, they are unknowingly helping Iago’s cause. They agree that Bianca should leave, since it is unprofessional for Othello to see Cassio with a woman. ![]() Cassio assures her that this is not so, and he merely found this handkerchief in his room. Upon seeing Cassio with the handkerchief, she begins to suspect Cassio of having an affair with another woman. Cassio and Iago arrive, and Desdemona tells them about Othello’s anger.īianca, Cassio’s mistress, arrives. Desdemona admits that she has lost the handkerchief, and this makes Othello furious. ![]() When Othello arrives, he passive-aggressively hints that Desdemona is sleeping with another man. She expresses distress over the loss of the handkerchief, but Emilia denies knowing anything of it. Desdemona asks the clown to tell Cassio that Othello seems to be considering rehiring him.
